Marvis VNA: Bringing AI-driven intelligence to your network

March 23, 2026

At Whitespider, we’re always looking for technologies that move our clients beyond reactive network management. One of the most compelling capabilities we’ve seen in the HPE Juniper Mist platform is Marvis — the Mist Virtual Network Assistant (VNA).

Here’s what it is, how it works, and why it matters.

What is Marvis?

Marvis is a single Virtual Network Assistant that correlates data across all network domains using the Mist AI cloud. Rather than siloing your wireless, wired, and WAN data into separate tools, Marvis brings everything together — giving you a unified, intelligent view of your entire network environment.

At its core, Marvis uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Natural Language Understanding (NLU), meaning your engineers can ask it questions in plain English and get meaningful answers back. It’s powered by Large Language Models (LLM) and Generative AI (GenAI) to make those interactions intuitive. One thing worth noting here: like any GenAI system, Marvis isn’t infallible. Where models are trained on poor or biased data, they can produce what the industry calls “hallucinations” — presenting incorrect outputs with apparent confidence. Juniper mitigates this by anchoring Marvis to real, live network telemetry rather than relying purely on generalised training data. That’s an important distinction.

Marvis is also part of what Juniper calls AICx — Artificial Intelligence Customer Experience. This is a continuous improvement loop involving network experts, customer success teams, and data science techniques. The more it’s used, the smarter it gets.

Important licensing note: Marvis VNA is an add-on subscription, licensed per device. It’s worth factoring this into your network refresh planning from the outset.

Three levels of AI assistance

What makes Marvis particularly interesting is how it scales its level of autonomy. Think of it in three layers:

At this level, the platform supports your engineers without replacing their judgement. You can initiate packet captures directly from the GUI dashboard at the exact moment you’re troubleshooting, and you can still SSH onto devices for verbose logging and debugging when needed. It’s not a huge departure from how most teams work today, but the data surfaced through Mist makes it easier to look in the right place, faster.

This is where Marvis starts to earn its keep. The platform pools telemetry and insights from across your network to serve up actionable recommendations. Coverage Hole Detection flags wireless dead spots and suggests whether a new AP is needed or an existing one can be repositioned. Insufficient Capacity Detection alerts you before performance degrades. Proactive RMA expedites the hardware replacement service in the portal on failure of components.

Marvis also runs anomaly detection across a wide range of protocol layers — DHCP, DNS, RADIUS, ARP, and more — as well as identifying bad cables, poorly performing clients, and WAN link issues across cable, LTE, and ISP connections. One standout feature is Dynamic pCAP, which automatically captures packets when a trigger event occurs. That alone can save hours during a complex troubleshooting session and trying to capture a problem event as it occurs.

This is the self-healing network vision becoming reality. At this level, Marvis takes autonomous corrective action. AI-Driven Radio Resource Management (RRM) optimises your wireless environment in real time, automatically adjusting 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels and power levels without waiting for a human to review a report. It also handles missing VLAN detection and port flapping remediation — common issues that can cause significant disruption if left unaddressed. This is evolving and will only get better and better.

Marvis delivers real, measurable value today, underpinned by HPE Juniper Mist’s microservices cloud architecture. Unlike traditional monolithic platforms, Mist’s cloud-native design means AI capabilities are continuously updated without disruptive upgrades, ensuring clients always benefit from the latest intelligence.

For WhiteSpider, Marvis sits at the heart of our managed services capability, giving our engineers richer insight, earlier warning, and the ability to deliver a higher standard of service across HPE Juniper MIST environments we support.
